The ground's capacity was only 10,000 people where the rally was held, but about 27,000–30,000 people were present on the spot. Tamil Nadu DGP Incharge G. Venkataraman said that the crowd of TVK usually is less crowded, but this time such a large number of people reached.
The time of the rally was scheduled from 3 pm to 10 pm, but people started gathering in the ground from 11 am. Vijay arrived at the rally for a long time and by then people were waiting for them hungry and thirsty. Vijay arrived at 7:40 pm and as soon as he was seen, the crowd became uncontrollable.
Due to the increasing number of people and the heat, many people began to faint. Vijay interrupted his speech and threw water bottles into the crowd to help, a video of which surfaced. This triggered a stampede, and the situation spiraled out of control within minutes.
The Tamil Nadu Police have formed a commission to investigate the stampede. The Union Home Ministry has also requested a detailed report from the state government. Vijay and his party workers are likely to be questioned in this matter.
