Kolkata: At least nine Bangladeshi nationals were killed and six others injured in a massive fire at a hotel in the Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata around 3 am on Wednesday, officials said.
Fire started at approximately 2 am, after which fire and emergency services were called to the scene. Several individuals were reported to have become unconscious from inhaling smoke and were removed and brought to hospital.
The victims had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment, according to Fire Department officials.
Firefighters launched a rescue and firefighting operation and brought the blaze under control. A total of 80 people have been rescued from the five-storey building, a senior official said.
Six injuries were reported and the victims were rushed to hospital for treatment. It was not immediately known whether they were ill or not.
The cause of the fire is still not known. The pictures displayed at the scene revealed the hotel was located in an older building with a high-rise area.
Investigators are probing the incident and are likely to conduct a tour of the hotel to find out how the fire began.
Nine people are dead, with more expected, a police officer said, as the dense smoke hampered firefighters' efforts to make it up the staircase to the upper floors.
There is a priority to try to save those inside, and find out what caused the fire, he added, as the cooling operation continues.
