National News: A disturbing allegation of gangrape inside the campus of South Kolkata Law College has sparked widespread outrage across West Bengal. The victim, a female law student, claims she was sexually assaulted and mentally tortured inside the college’s student union room for over three hours. The three accused, as per her complaint, are associated with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)—the student wing of the ruling political party.

According to the police, the incident occurred on June 25, between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM. The survivor filed a complaint the following day at Kasba Police Station, after which three suspects were arrested from different locations. They were produced before the Alipore Court, which ordered their custody until July 1.

From Proposal to Predation: The Turning Point

In the First Information Report (FIR), the survivor stated that the main accused, referred to as ‘J’, invited her to the union room for a discussion. Once there, he allegedly proposed marriage. When she rejected the proposal, explaining that she was already in a relationship, the atmosphere turned hostile. The other two accused, identified in the complaint as ‘M’ and ‘P’, reportedly did nothing to intervene — and may have recorded parts of the ordeal.

The FIR reveals that the student was forcibly confined, threatened, and ultimately assaulted, despite her repeated pleas for help.

Victim Suffers Asthma Attack During Assault

The survivor also mentioned that she suffered an asthma attack during the incident and begged for her inhaler, but the request was ignored. Even when she tried to approach the security guard posted at the college entrance, he allegedly failed to respond or assist her.

She was dragged back into the union room, where the main accused reportedly raped her while the others watched or filmed.

"I begged them. I was on my knees. I pleaded to be let go. They didn’t listen. I was blackmailed and threatened with death, and videos," she wrote in her statement.

“I Study Law, but Now I Seek Justice”

The victim, herself a student of law, concluded her complaint by demanding justice: “I have always believed in the law. Today, I ask for its protection. The accused must face consequences.”

Police have registered a case under multiple IPC sections, including rape, criminal intimidation, unlawful confinement, and conspiracy. The investigation is ongoing.

Political Ties Under Scrutiny

The fact that the accused reportedly hold or held posts in the TMCP student council has added a politically volatile dimension to the case. Opposition leaders have slammed the ruling party, alleging "institutional shelter for criminals" and are calling for a court-monitored independent probe.

The case has ignited a massive backlash on social media, with #JusticeForLawStudent trending nationally. Various student groups and human rights organisations have announced protests across campuses in Kolkata and beyond.

Not Just a Crime—A Crisis of Institutional Trust

Beyond the immediate crime, this case raises urgent concerns about the safety of women in educational spaces, the role of student political groups, and the failure of institutions to act in time.

As the police move forward with the probe, all eyes will be on whether the justice system responds with the speed, impartiality, and firmness that this deeply disturbing case demands.
