India's LCH Prachanda: A high-flying threat to China's borders?

The Indian Air Force's latest combat helicopter LCH Prachanda has set China into a frenzy. China is concerned about the 156 Prachanda helicopters' order because this helicopter can operate effectively at high altitude levels. Produced under the umbrella of Make in India, this helicopter is augmenting India's military power and making China re-strategize.

The new helicopter of the Indian Air Force, LCH Prachanda, is on the lips in China. Last month, India's defence ministry approved an order for 156 helicopters worth more than $7.3 billion to fly at altitudes of 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) or higher. With this, India intends to extend its influence to the high regions where it has problems with China and Pakistan. These helicopters have not yet reached the Indian Army rightly that negotiations are underway in China

Chinese army is watching the Indian Air Force's weapons

A Chinese military magazine has asserted that India's new aggressive attack helicopter will be more manageable for China's Z-10 attack helicopter. The magazine scoffed at the idea that India might employ the aircraft in high-altitude operations against neighbours. But this debate is a sign that the Chinese army is watching the Indian Air Force's weapons.

Make in India roused China

At the same time, LCH Prachanda is India's first domestic attack helicopter, designed and produced locally by the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It is intended to carry out air-to-ground attacks, such as anti-tank, anti-infantry and close air support. Its maiden flight was in 2010 and in the initial batch, 10 for the Indian Air Force and five for the Army were welcomed in 2022. The new contract will be delivered to the Army between 2028-2033.

Why is Prachanda so special?

Prachanda is a two-seat light attack helicopter with two turboshaft engines. India has produced it with French company Safran. It features glass cockpit, night vision, digital and laser sensors. It is lightweight and low-visibility with strong construction even in monsoon and capable of flying at high altitudes.

It is equipped with a 20 mm cannon and it is capable of carrying missiles, rockets and bombs on four hard points. All these weapons can be fired from the sight control system mounted on the helmet.
