Lucknow: People troubled by traffic in Lucknow can now expect some relief. The second phase of the Green Corridor Project being built on the banks of the Gomti River has started, and soon travel will become easier in many areas. LDA and officials say that this will directly benefit about 5 lakh people, will save time in daily commuting, and will get rid of jams.

Which routes will be connected in the second phase?

In this phase, roads and bridges have been built from Samta Moolak Chowk (Gomti Nagar) to Nishatganj. The route goes via Daliganj (pucca bridge) to Hanuman Setu, Nishatganj and Samta Moolak intersection – a total stretch of about 5-7 km. This is a four-lane, signal-free road, which will reduce the journey from Gomti Nagar to Old Lucknow (Daliganj, Hazratganj, Nishatganj) by 15-20 minutes. There may be some traffic jam at merging points at some places, but traffic-calming work is going on.

How will the common people benefit from this project?

The biggest benefit will be the reduction in travel time – where earlier we used to get stuck in traffic jams for hours, now we will travel faster on straight and wide roads. Daily traffic jam in busy areas like Nishatganj, Daliganj, Hanuman Setu will reduce significantly. Daily commuters, students, office goers will get the facility. Besides, connectivity between different parts of the city will improve, and the beauty of Gomti Riverfront will also increase. Officials are saying that when the entire project is completed, more than 1 lakh vehicles will be able to pass easily every day, and the pressure on the main roads of the city can be reduced by 40%.

What is the size of the entire Green Corridor Project?

This entire project is a 28 km long four-lane corridor, which is being built on both banks of the Gomti River. Starting from IIM Road, it will go till Kishan Path. It is divided into four phases – Phase 1 (metal bridge from IIM Road) is already underway. Phase 2 (from concrete bridge to Pipraghat) is now being inaugurated. Work on Phase 3 (Pipraghat to Shaheed Path) and Phase 4 (Shaheed Path to Kishan Path) is going on at a fast pace. The total cost is around Rs 2078 crore and is expected to be completed by 2027.

What is left to do in the project?

Officials say that work will continue on the remaining phase – more roads, bridges, flyovers and connecting roads will be built. Like from Pipraghat to Shaheed Path in Phase 3, and to Kishan Path in Phase 4. Elevated stretches and flyovers are also planned at some places. When completed, long-distance travel in Lucknow will become much easier and faster – from east to west without much jam.
