On Saturday, the Mahaa News office in Hyderabad came under a violent attack by a group of unidentified individuals. Eyewitnesses claim the attackers were supporters of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and followers of its leader, K.T. Rama Rao. Armed with sticks, knives, and stones, the mob entered the building and caused widespread damage.
During the assault, the attackers broke several vehicles parked outside the office and damaged furniture, computers, and other equipment inside. The newsroom was left in chaos. Several staff were injured and had to be taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The full scale of the destruction is still being calculated, but early reports suggest major damage to both infrastructure and staff morale.
Mahaa News, a regional outlet known for its critical coverage of political events in Telangana, strongly criticised the attack. A senior editor called it an attack on press freedom and the core values of democracy. “We won’t be silenced by threats,” they said.
In response, leaders from the Congress party, including the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, visited the Mahaa News office. They expressed solidarity and called the attack a direct attempt to suppress independent media. They also demanded that the culprits be arrested quickly.
Various media bodies, civil society groups, and political leaders across party lines condemned the violence. The Press Club of Hyderabad urged the police to arrest those responsible without delay.
So far, neither BRS nor K.T. Rama Rao has made an official comment. Meanwhile, the Telangana Police have begun an investigation, and additional security has been provided to other media offices in the city.
This attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of journalists in India. Many people think it's more crucial than ever to defend press freedom.
