Maharashtra: About two people were killed and four others were injured after an explosion occurred at a firecracker unit in Palghar district of Maharashtra on Tuesday, according to police. According to reports, while production was underway, a powerful explosion suddenly occurred in the firecracker gunpowder.
According to reports, there is a firecracker manufacturing company in the Konsai village of Wada taluka and "twine bombs" (thread-bound crackers) were being made in this company.
A total of 35 workers, mostly women were working in the manufacturing unit. Around 12 pm, while work was going on in the company, an explosion occurred while mixing the liquor to make firecrackers.
"The explosion took place when a chemical mixing process was underway, killing one worker on the spot, and leaving a woman with 90 per cent burn injuries," an official from Wada police station said.
The police officer said that the woman later succumbed to her wounds at a hospital.
Four other workers sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the Wada Rural Hospital. He said some of them were later shifted to the Bhiwandi sub-district hospital and another hospital for better treatment.
The official said, "the fire department and police immediately reached the spot to oversee rescue operations. The fire that broke out after the explosion was quickly extinguished by the fire fighters."
According to officials, the deceased have been identified as Bhavesh Dileep Vavare (35) and Monica Sachin Padvale (30). The injured included Monica Mahendra Jadhav (30), Jagruti Jagdish Gavate (27), Pratibha Pratap Pawar (30) and Monica Mohan Vardi (25).
On Sunday, about 25 persons were killed and six were injured in explosion at a private firecracker manufacturing unit in Kattanarpatti village in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.
