Mumbai: The name of the mayor of the country's richest municipal corporation has been finalized. The BJP's Ritu Tawde has been nominated by the Mahayuti alliance for the post of BMC Mayor.
Meanwhile, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena has nominated Sanjay Shankar Ghadi as the Deputy Mayor candidate. Ritu Tawade is a corporator from Ghatkopar, while Sanjay Shankar Ghadi was elected as a corporator from Magathane.
Voting for the new mayor in Mumbai will be held on February 11 at 12 PM. This time, the post has been reserved for a female corporator from the general category. The election is being overseen by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
On Saturday, Mumbai BJP President Amit Satam announced Ritu Tawade's name at the municipal corporation headquarters in the presence of senior party leaders and corporators. The names of Ritu Tawade and Rajashree Shirwadkar, a corporator from Sion, were being discussed. Meanwhile, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena declared Sanjay Shankar Ghadi as its candidate for the Deputy Mayor's post. The Deputy Mayor's term will be one and a half years.
Calling it a historic moment, Tawde expressed her gratitude to the party leadership for entrusting her with this responsibility. Amit Satam said that the new government will work towards making Mumbai a corruption-free city and the alliance will govern with the blessings and support of the people of Mumbai.
Even if the opposition fields candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, the BJP-Shinde-led alliance is confident of winning both positions based on the numerical strength of its 118 corporators in the 227-member municipal assembly.
It is worth noting that voting for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections was held on January 15th, while the counting of votes was completed on January 16th. In this election, the BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 89 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena secured 29 seats. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) got 65 seats, while Raj Thackeray's MNS won only 6 seats. The MahaYuti alliance has the majority
The majority mark in the mayoral election is 114 seats, which the Shiv Sena and BJP have jointly crossed. Therefore, the two parties, as part of the MahaYuti alliance, are electing the mayor of Mumbai. After much deliberation, BJP corporator Ritu Tawade's name has been finalized, as Eknath Shinde's faction of the Shiv Sena wanted a mayor from their own party.
