New Delhi: Amidst the ceasefire between the US and Iran, India has expressed deep concern over the large number of casualties resulting from Israel's relentless attacks on Lebanon, emphasizing the need to adhere to international laws and respect the sovereignty of nations. Expressing deep concern over the situation in Lebanon on Friday, India stated that the killing of a large number of civilians in these attacks is "deeply disturbing."

What did the Ministry of External Affairs say?

Speaking on the matter at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We are deeply concerned by reports of a large number of civilian casualties in Lebanon." Emphasizing India's role as a Troop Contributing Country (TCC) to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the spokesperson further added, "As a Troop Contributing Country to UNIFIL—which is engaged in maintaining peace and security in Lebanon—this turn of events is deeply disturbing."

Reiterating India's long-standing stance, Jaiswal stated, "India has always accorded the highest priority to the safety and security of civilians. It is essential to adhere to international law and to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations." The government also gave assurances that steps are being taken to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region. He noted, "Our Embassy in Lebanon remains in constant touch with the Indian community to ensure their safety and security." It is pertinent to note that, despite the ceasefire between the US and Iran, a large number of people have lost their lives in the attacks carried out by Israel on Lebanon.

How are India's ties with Gulf nations?

Jaiswal also mentioned that India is deepening its engagement with the Gulf nations to meet its energy requirements, while simultaneously keeping a close watch on the unfolding developments in West Asia. He stated, “We are closely monitoring the developments unfolding in West Asia. We remain in constant contact with the countries of the Gulf region. Acting on the Prime Minister's directives, our ministers are visiting Gulf nations to bolster our energy security.” He further informed that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is currently on a visit to Mauritius and will travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on April 11 and 12, 2026. Jaiswal added, “He will hold discussions with the UAE leadership with a view to further strengthening the ties between India and the UAE.”
