New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to execute his first major cabinet reshuffle since returning to power for a third consecutive term. As the political analysts are suggesting that the restructuring could happen just before or shortly after the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament in July.

What had been rumored?

The overhaul had been rumored for the third week of July. It is anticipated to align with the announcement of a refreshed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organizational team under party president Nitin Nabin. Though government officials have not released any formal statement yet, but the move is widely seen as a strategic pivot to dictate the administration's policy direction for the rest of its tenure.

High-Profile portfolio shifts on the horizon?

Several heavyweights are reportedly pinned for significant role changes. Nirmala Sitharaman, who is serving as the current Finance Minister, is being rumored to be transitioning to the Ministry of Education. Whereas Piyush Goyal is tipped to assume a frontline financial portfolio following Sitharaman’s potential shift. Infrastructure veterans like Nitin Gadkari and Manohar Lal Khattar are also among those facing potential shifts in their responsibilities.

Are these the new inductions and lateral entries?

To balance regional interests and alliance dynamics, the upcoming expansion is highly likely to feature prominent lateral entries and coalition partners. The key inductions can be the regional leaders and MPs including Nitish Kumar, Raghav Chadha, Sukhendu Shekhar Ray, Shrikant Shinde, and Anurag Thakur are strongly tipped for cabinet berths. The speculations of technocratic roles are also building around former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, who may be inducted to handle a critical economic or advisory portfolio.

What are the political catalysts behind the shakeup?

The anticipated reshuffle is driven by two main factors, that are the electoral strategy and crisis management. With critical state assembly elections approaching, the BJP aims to consolidate its voter base across key demographics, specifically focusing on Other Backward Classes (OBCs), women, and youth. While simultaneously satisfying the administrative demands of its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition partners.

Furthermore, the restructuring serves as a damage-control measure following a string of recent high-profile controversies, including the NEET paper leak scandal and widespread irregularities within the CBSE digital marking system, both of which have drawn heavy public criticism.
