A Turbulent Weather Shift
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across 10 states—Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Odisha, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan—driven by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and a western disturbance. This intense weather system, already causing disruptions in Delhi, is expected to bring gusty winds of 50-70 kmph, posing risks of urban flooding, crop damage, and landslides, particularly in hilly regions. Orange alerts have been issued, urging residents to prepare for significant impacts.

UP and Bihar Brace for Impact
Eastern Uttar Pradesh districts like Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Gorakhpur, and northern Bihar regions including Patna and Muzaffarpur, face heightened risks of waterlogging and flash floods. The IMD predicts 70-120 mm of rain in these areas, with thunderstorms likely to disrupt power and transportation. Farmers fear losses to standing crops like paddy, while civic authorities in Lucknow and Patna are deploying pumps to combat flooding. The IMD advises avoiding open fields and waterlogged roads, as lightning strikes remain a concern.

Bengal and Uttarakhand on High Alert
West Bengal’s coastal districts, such as Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly, are set to experience heavy downpours and winds up to 70 kmph, potentially damaging thatched structures. Uttarakhand, vulnerable to landslides, faces heavy rain warnings for Dehradun and Nainital, with the state suspending Char Dham Yatra travel. Disaster response teams are on standby, and schools in affected districts may close. The IMD’s alerts emphasize the need for vigilance in these high-risk zones.

Nationwide Preparedness Measures
Other states like Jharkhand, Odisha, Haryana, and Punjab are also under watch, with forecasts of moderate to heavy rain and isolated hailstorms. The IMD has urged fishermen in Bengal to avoid sea voyages and recommended real-time weather monitoring. State governments are coordinating with the National Disaster Response Force to mitigate risks, while public advisories focus on securing loose structures and ensuring drainage systems are clear. As India braces for this monsoon fury, proactive measures are critical to minimize disruption and protect lives.
