National News: According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is very active across the country at this time. Life has been disrupted due to continuous rain. Delhi has recorded 399.8 mm of rainfall this August, which is the highest in the last 15 years. This is considered to be the rainiest August month in the capital after 2010.
The retreat ceremony had to be temporarily stopped due to seven feet of water in Hussainiwala in the Firozpur district of Punjab. The bridge connecting 14 flood-affected villages of Fazilka also got submerged in water, due to which it has been closed. The situation in Ajnala town of Amritsar is continuously worsening, and water has reached the settlements. However, the people of Gurdaspur and Pathankot have gotten some relief due to the decrease in the water level of the Ravi River.
Army, BSF, NDRF, and SDRF teams are continuously engaged in relief work. 20 BSF helicopters are delivering material to the affected areas, and so far more than 7200 people have been evacuated safely. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has instructed the officials to continue the relief work at a fast pace.
The Tangri River has wreaked havoc in Ambala, Haryana. Water has entered 45 nearby colonies and many villages. The situation has become more serious due to the breaking of the embankment of the Som River in Yamunanagar. SDRF teams evacuated more than a hundred children and families safely. Minister Anil Vij took stock of the situation and instructed the officials to be vigilant.
Rain has also caused heavy devastation in Rajasthan. Five members of the same family were swept away in the Ruparel River in the Chittorgarh district, out of which three were rescued. At the same time, a woman and a man died due to drowning in the Udaipurwati area of Jhunjhunu. Two sisters who went to bathe in a pond in Beawar also lost their lives. According to the state government, 130 bodies have been pulled out of the water in the last month in rain- and flood-related incidents.
SDRF teams in various states have saved the lives of more than 856 people so far. The central and state governments are constantly monitoring the situation. Experts believe that the danger of heavy rain will remain in many parts in the coming days, so people are being appealed to remain alert.
