IMD Warns of Heavy Rain Across 15 States, Delhi and UP on Alert

New Delhi: Monsoon has once again gained momentum across the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) says that rain may intensify in many parts of North, East and Northeast India in the coming days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in some states, in view of which people have been advised to remain alert.

According to the Meteorological Department, on Friday, rain activities can be seen in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh. There may be heavy rain along with thunderstorm at many places.

What is the reason for increase in rainfall?

According to meteorologists, a distinct low-pressure area has formed near the North-West Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast. This system is continuously drawing moisture and due to this, there is a possibility of increase in rainfall from Eastern India to Western Himalayas. Its effect may persist for the next seven days.

Which areas will see the most impact?

Extremely heavy rainfall may occur at some places in Odisha. Apart from this, heavy rains are expected to continue in Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Waterlogging may occur in many low-lying areas.

What relief will the people of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana get?

Humidity has been increasing the problems of people in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana for the last few days. The Meteorological Department estimates that there may be light to moderate rain in the next few days. Cloud movement will continue, which is expected to bring slight drop in temperature and provide relief from the heat.

Why should we be more careful in hilly states?

Due to continuous rains, the risk of landslides may increase in many areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. There is a possibility of the water level of rivers and drains also increasing. In such a situation, those traveling on hilly roads have been advised to travel only after knowing the weather.

There may be intermittent heavy rains in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for the next one week. Due to this, there is a possibility of flooding of fields and low-lying areas. The Meteorological Department has advised farmers to monitor their crops. At the same time, the common people have been asked to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains and follow the instructions issued by the local administration.
