India is experiencing a dramatic weather split—while states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar endure relentless heatwaves, Delhi and Rajasthan are preparing for thunderstorms and rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest advisory issued on May 10, 2025, has offered a ray of hope with the possibility of an early monsoon onset by the end of May.

Heatwave Tightens Grip Over UP and Bihar

Cities including Patna, Gaya, and Prayagraj are reeling under extreme heat, with temperatures crossing 42°C. The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions will persist at least until May 14, especially in Bihar and eastern parts of UP. High humidity levels have added to the discomfort, increasing the risk of heatstroke.

The situation has led to water scarcity in several rural belts, further compounding the crisis. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid going out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and use public cooling shelters. The agricultural sector is also feeling the pressure, as farmers are unable to begin sowing due to dry fields, intensifying the wait for monsoon rains.

Thunderstorm Alert in Delhi and Rajasthan

While eastern India sizzles, the northwest is on alert for an entirely different weather threat. Delhi, Jaipur, and Jodhpur are under a yellow alert due to a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation triggering thunderstorms, light rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds up to 40 km/h.

The IMD forecasts cloudy skies and scattered rainfall in these regions through May 12. While these storms may cause temporary disruptions, they are expected to bring much-needed relief from the rising temperatures. Residents have been advised to avoid open areas during lightning and secure loose objects outdoors. The weather alert carries additional weight in Rajasthan’s sensitive border districts, already dealing with heightened tension due to security concerns.

Early Monsoon May Bring Relief

In a much-awaited announcement, the IMD has projected that the southwest monsoon could arrive early this year, with Kerala likely to receive its first showers around May 28. The forecast also suggests above-average rainfall across northern India, including UP and Bihar, which may help ease the ongoing heatwave and support agricultural recovery. A strong La Niña pattern is seen as a major factor driving this forecast.

Emergency Measures Underway

Local administrations in all four states are intensifying awareness drives and emergency preparations. From public advisories to water management strategies, efforts are being ramped up to protect both urban and rural populations. While the monsoon outlook is promising, immediate attention remains on dealing with extreme heat and storm-related risks.
