National News: During the Dahi Handi festival in Man Khurd, Maharashtra Nagar, a tragic accident occurred. Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhary, a 32-year-old participant associated with Bal Govind Pathak, fell while tying ropes for the event. He was immediately rushed to Shatabdi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. This incident shocked the local community and turned the festive mood into grief.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), by Saturday afternoon, around 30 people had been injured during Dahi Handi celebrations across the city. The majority of these injuries were due to falls from height or accidents while forming human pyramids.
Hospital Reports
In response to recurring accidents, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani issued instructions to all Nair Municipal Hospitals to provide free treatment for injured Govindas. Hospitals are also required to send reports every three hours to the Emergency Control Room, enabling authorities to monitor the situation closely.
Special teams have been deployed at major Dahi Handi locations to manage crowds and ensure safety. The BMC is emphasizing precautionary measures this year to prevent accidents and protect participants.
Dahi Handi is a traditional festival celebrated in Maharashtra. Participants, called Govindas, form human pyramids to reach and break a pot filled with curd. The event celebrates the playful acts of Lord Krishna. While it is a vibrant cultural tradition, it also carries risks due to the physical challenges and heights involved.
Local residents and participants expressed deep sorrow over Jagmohan’s death. Many have called for stricter safety rules, protective gear for participants, and careful supervision during the event to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
This incident highlights the need for careful planning and safety measures during festivals. Authorities are expected to review existing guidelines and implement stricter protocols to prevent injuries in upcoming celebrations.
