Mumbai was hit by heavy rain on Monday, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city and major disruptions to daily life. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all schools, including afternoon shifts, as a safety measure. Mumbai Police also issued an advisory asking residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain cautious with the city placed under an orange alert.
Continuous rainfall entered its 3rd day on Monday in Mumbai. Many low-lying areas were under water, and traffic slowed down badly. In places like Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex, rising water levels made driving almost impossible, with some vehicles forced to stop. Local train services, often called the lifeline of Mumbai, were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes, according to reports. Bus services continued as usual by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).
Officials confirmed the downpour became stronger after 9 am on Monday, adding to water already collected from overnight showers. The highest rainfall recorded in eastern suburbs was 60.57 mm between 8 am Sunday and 6 am Monday, as per the BMC's weather stations. Western suburbs saw 52.30 mm, while the island city had 45 mm of rain.
The National Disaster Management Authority issued a red warning for Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, and Raigad until noon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also placed Mumbai and Thane under orange alert until Tuesday, which is just below the highest level. After that, rainfall may reduce slightly, but heavy showers are still expected. Officials have again asked citizens to remain cautious. Mumbai’s Police Commissioner repeated the advice to avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert during this period of intense rain.
