Chandigarh: New photos of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa’s son, Aqeel Akhtar, have raised more questions about his mysterious death. If Aqeel was truly a drug addict and mentally unstable, how was he able to actively participate in his mother and former Punjab minister Razia Sultana’s political campaigns year after year? These newly surfaced photos have created confusion and cast doubt on the family’s earlier claims. Meanwhile, the Haryana government has written to the Centre, recommending that the case be handed over to the CBI for investigation.
The case of Aqeel Akhtar’s mysterious death has taken another turn after several photos and videos emerged showing him looking healthy and active. In some visuals, Aqeel is seen campaigning for his mother and even addressing a Congress party meeting. Despite this, his father, former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, has repeatedly stated that Aqeel had been addicted to drugs for 18 years, suffered from severe mental illness, and frequently visited rehabilitation centers. However, Malerkotla political worker Shamsuddin Chaudhary, who filed a complaint accusing the family of murder, questioned how someone supposedly so sick could appear perfectly fine in those photos and videos — many of which were shared on Malerkotla Congress’s official social media pages.
Razia Sultana, Aqeel’s mother, has been an active Congress leader and former minister from Malerkotla. Aqeel was often seen accompanying her at political gatherings between 2017 and 2019, according to the party’s social media records. Some reports even claim he campaigned for her during the 2022 Punjab elections and appeared completely normal at the time. This has raised a critical question — how could someone addicted to strong drugs for nearly two decades, suffering from schizophrenia and hallucinations, take part in public campaigns so actively? The Haryana Police SIT, probing his death, plans to ask Mustafa’s family these same questions. SIT chief Vikram Nehra confirmed that notices have been sent to family members for questioning and that the case is being investigated on priority, exploring every possible angle.
During the post-mortem, doctors found a single injection mark above Aqeel’s right elbow. This detail has sparked fresh doubts — was it a drug injection he gave himself, or did someone else inject him with medication or something else? Usually, drug users have multiple marks, mostly on the left arm, but Aqeel had only one on his right arm. SIT chief Nehra refused to comment on this, saying the case is under investigation, but assured that all such details would be examined carefully to determine if they are connected to the cause of death.
Complainant Shamsuddin Chaudhary expressed dissatisfaction with the SIT’s progress, alleging that police have not yet seized Aqeel’s gadgets, diary, or other personal items, nor arrested any suspects. He also claimed that Mustafa and his supporters are threatening him, and therefore demanded a CBI probe to uncover the truth. Aqeel Akhtar was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his Panchkula home on October 16. His family claimed it was due to a drug overdose. However, days later, a video surfaced in which Aqeel accused his father and other family members of threatening his life. Following this, Chaudhary, a former neighbor, filed an FIR against Mustafa and his family. Mustafa denied all allegations, insisting that his son had been mentally ill and addicted to drugs for 18 years.
The SIT is now waiting for Aqeel’s viscera report to determine the exact cause of death, as the post-mortem report did not clearly specify it.
