National News: After finishing his UK visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now reached the Maldives for a two-day state visit on 25 and 26 July 2025. During this visit, both countries are likely to sign several important agreements aimed at improving cooperation and strengthening their long-standing relationship.

Indian High Commissioner Calls It a Significant Moment

India’s High Commissioner to Maldives, G. Balasubramaniam, described the visit as a very meaningful one, not just for political reasons, but also for cultural and strategic ties. He mentioned that multiple new agreements are expected to be finalized, which will boost India-Maldives relations in the years ahead.

Modi’s Third Official Visit to Maldives

This is PM Modi’s third official visit to the Maldives. He earlier visited in 2018 and 2019. What makes this visit even more notable is that it is the first visit by a foreign head of state during the term of President Mohamed Muizzu.

Modi to Attend Maldives Independence Day as Chief Guest

On 26 July, PM Modi will attend Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations as the chief guest. This marks the first occasion since 2017 that the Maldivian government has invited a foreign dignitary to serve as the chief guest at their national celebration.

Focus on Stronger Bilateral Cooperation

During his visit, PM Modi will also meet President Muizzu for bilateral discussions. Topics on the agenda include economic growth, maritime security, climate-related issues, and regional peace. The two leaders had previously met at the COP summit in Dubai, and President Muizzu had visited India in October 2024.

This visit is expected to give fresh momentum to the relationship between the two countries, particularly in key areas such as trade, security, and environmental sustainability.

Deepening Bond Between The Two Neighboring Countries

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Maldives highlights the strengthening partnership and deepening ties between the two neighboring countries. His presence as chief guest at the Independence Day event is not only a mark of mutual respect but also reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and the Maldives. This trip is likely to open new avenues of cooperation and create lasting goodwill between the two nations.
