Nikki dowry case: A new video has taken the Greater Noida dowry death case to a new turn. In this clip, the deceased's elder sister, Kanchan, is seen weeping inconsolably while allegedly making a video of her younger sister, Nikki. Nikki is seen sitting on the stairs and has severe injuries on her upper body. In the video, Kanchan can be heard saying, "Sister, what have you done?" Janbhavna Times cannot independently confirm the authenticity of this video.
The 32-second clip comes after an old video in which Nikki was seen engulfed in flames and staggering and falling down the stairs inside the house went viral. The victim's family had alleged that Nikki's husband, Vipin Bhati, and her in-laws set her on fire.
Meanwhile, CCTV footage shared by neighbors from outside the Bhati house paints a completely different picture, with Vipin Bhati, the prime accused in the dowry death case, standing outside the house with a water pipe at the time of the incident. The video also shows the sisters' children playing outside the house at the same time. This footage contradicts the testimony of Nikki's 5-year-old son, who said his father poured something on his mother, slapped her, and set her on fire with a lighter. The police have not yet commented on the existing video.
In another video, Vipin Bhati and a woman wearing a shawl are seen dragging Nikki by her hair and brutally assaulting her, while Vipin also tries to punch the person behind the camera, who is believed to be his elder sister, Kanchan.
On Monday, Greater Noida's Kasna police arrested Nikki's father-in-law, Satvir, 26. This is the fourth arrest in the case. Satvir, accused of assaulting Nikki, was taken into custody hours after her brother-in-law Rohit Bhati was arrested. On Sunday, the police arrested Nikki's mother-in-law, while Nikki's husband and main accused, Vipin Bhati, was arrested after he was injured in a police encounter. Vipin has since been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
Nikki's sister Kanchan said she suffered atrocities for years. It was Kanchan's recording that exposed the incident. In one video, Vipin and another woman were seen dragging Nikki by her hair, while in another clip, the severely burnt victim was seen stumbling and falling down the stairs. Nikki died on her way to the hospital on Thursday night.
We were beaten and tortured for days. They were demanding Rs 36 lakh. They hit her on the neck and head, threw acid, and set her on fire in front of her child, Kanchan said. When she tried to intervene, she was also attacked. They slapped me. "I was injured and remained unconscious for the whole day," she added. Kanchan further claimed that the family wanted to eliminate Nikki so that Vipin could remarry. Adding to the horror, Nikki's six-year-old son gave an eyewitness statement. They poured something on my mother, then slapped her and set her on fire with a lighter.
Following Kanchan’s complaint, the police registered an FIR at the Kasna police station under sections 103(1) (murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 61(2) (attempt to commit an offense punishable with life imprisonment or other offense) of the BNS. Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar confirmed that with Satvir’s arrest, all four accused are now behind bars.
Neighbors and relatives of the Bhati family have raised several arguments questioning the dowry harassment allegations. They say that Nikki's son was brainwashed by Kanchan to lie. They further said that Vipin was financially stable, ran a grocery shop, and earned through rent. They say that dowry was never demanded. According to neighbors, the real dispute was over the beauty parlor run by Kanchan and Nikki and the Instagram reels they made to promote it.
Local women in the neighborhood alleged that the sisters' social media activities were the root cause of the dispute. Friends of the Bhati family said that Vipin was mocked in his community over the sisters' Instagram videos. According to them, people repeatedly taunted him over the content his wife was posting. According to neighbors, on the morning of August 21, Vipin allegedly gave the sisters an ultimatum to close their Instagram accounts. They said that this is how the quarrel started, but they also said that Vipin had no reason to hit her. A neighbor said that dowry was never discussed. Instead, the panchayat decided to close both the parlor and the Instagram account.
