Patna: Bihar Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Nitish Kumar will bid farewell to the Bihar Legislature on Monday, March 30. Anant Singh, the influential MLA from Mokama, confirmed the news of his resignation. On Sunday, a gathering of prominent JD(U) leaders took place at Nitish Kumar's residence ahead of his departure from the Legislative Council. Emerging from his meeting with the CM, Anant Singh stated that Nitish Kumar remains unyielding despite extensive persuasion.

When will Nitish Kumar resign?

Nitish Kumar had already been elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16. According to parliamentary rules, it is mandatory to resign from membership in the other legislative house within 14 days of being elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Consequently, by March 30, it has become mandatory for Nitish Kumar to resign from the Legislative Council, and for BJP National President Nitin Navin to resign from the Legislative Assembly. Nitin Navin was scheduled to submit his resignation on Sunday but postponed the decision at the last minute. Meanwhile, Anant Singh has confirmed that Nitish Kumar will indeed tender his resignation from the post of MLC on Monday.

In fact, JD(U) MLAs, MPs, ministers, and key leaders began arriving unexpectedly at the CM's residence on Sunday. On Sunday evening, numerous senior JD(U) leaders gathered at the Chief Minister's residence and held discussions with the CM. These leaders included Union Minister of Panchayati Raj Lalan Singh, JD(U) National Executive President Sanjay Kumar Jha, Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, and Rural Works Minister Ashok Chaudhary, among others. The meeting continued, but Anant Singh departed early. Outside, he spoke to members of the media. Confirming the news of Nitish Kumar's resignation, Anant Singh remarked that while they are making every effort to persuade him to stay, he remains adamant. When asked whether the CM would resign from the Legislative Council on Monday, he answered in the affirmative.

The Chief Minister has been a continuous member of the Legislative Council since 2006. On May 7, 2024, he became a member of the Legislative Council for the fourth consecutive term—a tenure that was originally scheduled to conclude on May 6, 2030. The Chief Minister has now joined the ranks of leaders who have served as members in all four legislative houses. He was first elected as an MLA from the Harnaut Assembly constituency in 1985. Subsequently, he was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha in 1989. He was elected from the Nalanda Lok Sabha constituency five consecutive times (1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999) and once again in 2004. He is entering the Rajya Sabha for the first time. It is expected that he will take the oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 10.

Will Nitin Nabin Resign as Well?

BJP National President Nitin Nabin is set to resign from his membership in the Legislative Assembly on Monday. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2026. Consequently, he is stepping down from his position as a member of the Legislative Assembly. Nitin first became an MLA from the Bankipur constituency in 2006; since then, he has been continuously elected from this constituency. There were reports that Nabin would tender his resignation as early as Sunday. In this regard, the Assembly Secretariat had even issued a notification to the media stating that Nitin Nabin would submit his resignation in the Assembly Speaker's office chamber at 8:40 AM. Consequently, the Assembly office was kept open on Sunday as well. However, Nitin Nabin departed for Assam to campaign for the elections without submitting his resignation. Upon receiving this information, the Assembly Secretariat informed the media that, due to unavoidable circumstances, he did not submit his resignation today.

Will Nitish Kumar Enter Delhi Politics?

For nearly 20 years, Nitish Kumar has been the central figure in the politics of Bihar. He has also set a record for taking the oath as Chief Minister the highest number of times. Now, he is shifting his focus to Delhi politics via the Rajya Sabha. He has previously served as a Union Minister holding various portfolios—including Railways—at the Centre. Nitish Kumar had joined the NDA while working alongside Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Delhi.
