No relief to Pawan Khera as SC refuses to protect him, asks to move Assam court

New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera faced a major setback on Friday as the Supreme Court refused to extend and entertain a plea of the MP in a case filed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. The court also asked Pawan Khera to move to an Assam court to decide over the matter.  

The top court asked Khera to move a court of competent jurisdiction in Assam for anticipatory bail in the case, as per PTI report.

During a press conference on April 5, Khera alleged that the Assam CM's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, had multiple passports and foreign property, which were not declared in Sarma's election affidavit for the April 9 Assembly polls in that state. The CM and his wife rejected the allegations as false and fabricated.

Earlier, on April 15, the Supreme Court had stayed a Telangana High Court order granting Khera one-week transit anticipatory bail.

Appearing for the Assam government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the Telangana High Court lacked territorial jurisdiction to hear the matter.

The case was registered by the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to false statements in connection with an election, right of private defence, and cheating.
