New Delhi: Today, drivers associated with Ola Cabs, Uber, Rapido, Porter and other app-based services have come out on the streets. They say that the earnings are continuously decreasing, while the expenses are increasing. In such a situation, a strike was the last option left. This protest is being organized under the banner of Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT).
Drivers say that the government has not yet fixed the minimum base fare, although it is clearly written in the rules. Taking advantage of this, companies reduce fares at any time. The result is clear. Even after driving all day, there is very little money left in hand. Many drivers say that now their earnings are barely enough to cover the vehicle expenses and fuel.
TGPWU President Shaik Salahuddin says that due to the negligence of the government, the companies have got a free hand to act arbitrarily. According to him, there is no transparent system to decide the fare and the entire risk has been passed on to the drivers.
This is not the first time. Earlier on December 31, delivery partners had also gone on strike. They also said that despite working long hours, they are paid less and there is no social security.
App taxi and auto drivers in Mumbai have also announced a strike. Their demands include a ban on illegal bike taxis, strictness on fare policy and a solution to problems related to panic button. Drivers say that they have to spend around Rs 12,000 themselves to get the new panic devices installed. On top of that, due to an increase in permits, the number of autos has increased, due to which the number of passengers is getting reduced.
If the strike continues for a long time, cab and auto services in the cities could be badly affected. Passengers will face problems, but drivers say that it is necessary to take this step to save their livelihood. He clearly says, “If earnings do not increase then driving will become difficult.”
