The demand for granting full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is gaining momentum. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reached out to all key political parties through letters, requesting them to bring up this matter in Parliament.
I’ve sent letters to all parties with several MPs, urging them to support us in ensuring that the promise of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is fulfilled. Raise this issue forcefully in Parliament so that a bill can be introduced in this very session and Jammu and Kashmir regains its statehood."
"This is not about any one party or government. The people of Jammu and Kashmir were assured that full statehood would be granted to them. This promise was made during rallies, in front of the Supreme Court, and even in Parliament. Now we want that this promise be fulfilled."
On the upcoming hearing of Article 370 in the Supreme Court, he said, "The hearing is scheduled for the 8th. In its judgement on August 5, the Supreme Court had said that Jammu and Kashmir should be granted statehood at the earliest. ‘At the earliest’ has taken so many years. If the Supreme Court hadn't set a deadline regarding elections, I wouldn’t be speaking to you today as Chief Minister. Elections happened only because the Supreme Court imposed a time limit."
Regarding the situation after the Pahalgam terror attack, the CM said, Since the April 22 Pahalgam attack, there has been an increase in the number of tourists visiting the area. Four lakh people have undertaken the Amarnath Yatra. Tourists will benefit from the hospitality of the people of Kashmir."
Speaking on the disaster in Dharali, Uttarakhand, Omar Abdullah said,
"We are clearing forests and cutting through mountains. I believe we are also at risk. We must be mindful of this. Our sympathies are with the people of Uttarakhand."
