Panaji: The results of the Panaji Municipal Corporation elections demonstrated the dominance of the BJP. In the election results across the 30 wards, the majority of the BJP's candidates emerged victorious. Prior to this, voting was conducted peacefully on March 11, 2026. Upon the completion of the vote count, the BJP secured a resounding victory in the Panaji Municipal Corporation elections.

What was the turnout?

A voter turnout of 69.07 percent was recorded in this election. The highest voter turnout was observed in Ward 23, where 81.94 percent of eligible voters cast their ballots. A total of 69 candidates were in the fray for the Panaji Municipal Corporation elections, and voting was conducted using traditional paper ballots across 48 polling stations. Of these wards, 10 are reserved for women, 8 for OBCs (Other Backward Classes), and 1 for STs (Scheduled Tribes).

What was the political equation?

This crucial municipal election was viewed as a fierce contest between the BJP-backed faction and the opposition alliance. The BJP-backed faction is led by Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate, who fielded candidates in all 30 wards. Meanwhile, the opposition comprised a united front of State Congress supporters and independent candidates, featuring prominent leaders such as Utpal Parrikar. Previously, in the Panaji Municipal Corporation elections held on March 20, 2021, the BJP-backed panel led by Babush Monserrate had won 25 out of the 30 wards.
