National News: Parliament on Monday witnessed intense political drama as the government and the opposition stood firm on their respective stances. While the opposition staged repeated protests—sometimes marching to the well of the House and at other times staging walkouts over the SIR issue—the government remained resolute in its determination to push through key legislative business. Amid the uproar, three bills were passed in the Lok Sabha and four in the Rajya Sabha, sparking heated exchanges between leaders. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the manner of passing the bills, calling it a “betrayal of democracy.”

JP Nadda’s Strong Response to Opposition Protests

Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, hit back at the opposition, particularly over disruptions during the discussion on the Manipur bills. He asserted that while protests are an essential part of democracy, holding Parliament hostage was unacceptable. The atmosphere in both Houses remained tense, with no sign of compromise from either side.

Morning Session Marred by Chaos

The day began with the opposition mounting protests over the SIR issue, resulting in chaos as soon as the proceedings started. The disruption forced the presiding officers to adjourn both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha until 2 p.m., delaying the day’s legislative agenda.

Government Pushes Ahead with Legislative Business

Once the Houses reconvened in the afternoon, the government pressed forward. In the Lok Sabha, the Sports Governance Bill-2025 and the Anti-Doping Bill-2025 were debated and cleared through voice votes. Later, the Lok Sabha approved the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill-2025.
Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, proceedings moved forward with the passage of the Manipur Appropriation Bill-2025, which was soon followed by the approval of the Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill-2025. Throughout the process, opposition MPs continued slogan-shouting from the well, prompting Kharge to accuse the government of undermining parliamentary debate.

Merchant Shipping Bill Sparks Further Uproar

The unrest escalated when the Merchant Shipping Bill-2025 was brought forward. As Union Ports and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal rose to speak, opposition protests grew louder, leading to another adjournment. Upon resumption, Kharge raised the detention of opposition MPs during the SIR protest, but the Chair urged him to remain on topic.

Opposition Walkout and Final Legislative Push

Nadda brushed aside Kharge’s remarks as irrelevant, leading the opposition to walk out of the House. Before their exit, Nadda pointed out that those professing to stand for Manipur were opposing its bills. Taking advantage of the opposition’s absence, the government promptly cleared the Merchant Shipping Bill and the Scheduled Caste Reservation Bill for Goa, bringing a dramatic and contentious day in Parliament to a close.
