Parliament Standoff May End As Govt Says Amit Shah Will Respond To Student Protest Row

New Delhi: With Parliament stuck on a stand-off over an Opposition demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah explain the police action against the students protesting in Delhi, the government on Monday said the minister will speak to the House on the issue, perhaps bringing an end to the deadlock which began since the Monsoon Session of Parliament had started.

What did Kiren Rijiju's say?

At the Parliament, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told the media that the government is prepared to discuss any concerns related to the students and will address the Opposition's issues.

“The government is ready for a discussion on issues related to students. We are ready and will respond to all the points that will be raised by the Opposition. The Home Minister will respond,” Rijiju said.

He also asked the Opposition to not cause any disruption during the discussion so as to enable the discussion of the House to go on smoothly.

"My only point made to the Opposition is that while the discussion and a reply are being made, the Opposition should not create disturbances to prevent the statement of the Home Minister. They must listen to the reply of the Home Minister and the government. Once discussion begins, we must have a threadbare discussion," the Minister added.

What was the claim of the Opposition?

The Opposition has said that the police's force use against students protesting on June 20 under the banner of the CJP was "excessive" and anti-riot equipment, including pellet guns, were used. 

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have seen prolonged Opposition protest for past few days where MPs have asked for a response from the Home Minister with regard to allegations.

Opposition MPs have been holding daily protest outside the Parliament gates, too.

The Parliament Monsoon Session will conclude on August 13.
