Ethiopia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the country's highest civilian honor, 'The Great Honor of Ethiopia,' during his official visit to Ethiopia. This honor was given for strengthening the relations between India and Ethiopia and for his leadership at the global level.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali presented this honor to PM Modi in a simple but dignified ceremony held at the Addis International Convention Centre. This is the first time that this award has been received by an international head of state.
After receiving the honor, PM Modi said that he felt a sense of belonging as soon as he stepped on Ethiopian soil. He said that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself came to pick him up at the airport and later also took him to Friendship Park and the Science Museum. There was a frank discussion between the two leaders on many important topics.
Ethiopia has joined the countries that have bestowed their highest civilian honor on Prime Minister Modi. Till now 25 countries have honored him with such a prestigious honor. PM Modi is on his first bilateral visit to Ethiopia on 16 and 17 December 2025.
In his address, PM Modi said that education and knowledge are the foundation of any country. He reminded them that Indian teachers have been playing an important role in Ethiopia's development and education system for the last hundred years.
Describing this honor as the honor of the entire country, Prime Minister Modi said that he is accepting it on behalf of 140 crore Indians. He dedicated this achievement to the Indians and Ethiopians who have strengthened the relationship between the two countries for generations.
As soon as he reached Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali welcomed PM Modi with a hug. After this, PM Modi visited the Science Museum in Addis Ababa, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was also present with him. This visit seemed to fill new energy in the relations between the two countries.
