New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. The facility is now the largest airport terminal in Northeast India.
The event marks a major step in improving air connectivity and infrastructure in the region.
The new terminal is expected to change travel in the Northeast. It can handle millions of passengers every year and is designed to make flying easier and more comfortable for travellers. Officials say the project will support tourism, trade, and business growth across the region.
The terminal isn’t just big, it’s nature-themed. Its design takes inspiration from Assam’s forests, wildlife and culture. The project used local materials and reflects the region’s traditions and biodiversity.
The building sprawls over a large area and includes modern amenities for passengers. It also has space for future expansion as travel demand grows.
On Friday, PM Modi had also shared some pictures of the airport terminal and said that “increased capacity means better ‘Ease of Living’ and a boost for commerce as well as tourism.”
The new terminal was built at a cost of around Rs 4,000- Rs 5,000 crore. The terminal building is spread across an area of 1,40,000 square metres.
Guwahati's Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport is named after the state's first chief minister.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bordoloi outside the terminal.
This development fits into a broader push to strengthen infrastructure in the Northeast. Leaders hope improved air links will open up fresh opportunities for businesses and create more jobs in the region.
Officials say the terminal will soon become fully operational. They expect it to turn Guwahati into a key aviation hub for travel within India and to nearby countries. Plans are also in place to add more facilities and services in the coming years.
