Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport in Kerala to the nation, a landmark project set to redefine India’s maritime trade. Later, he will travel to Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, to inaugurate and lay the foundation for development projects worth over Rs 58,000 crore, underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure and regional growth.

Vizhinjam Port: A Maritime Game-Changer
The Rs 8,900-crore Vizhinjam Port, India’s first semi-automated transshipment hub, is strategically located near Thiruvananthapuram, just 10 nautical miles from major global shipping routes. With a natural 20-meter draft, it can handle ultra-large container ships, reducing India’s reliance on foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore. Since its trial run in July 2024, the port has managed 593,000 TEUs across 285 ships, showcasing its potential to handle up to 4.5 million TEUs annually. Operated by Adani Ports under a public-private partnership, it promises job creation and economic growth for Kerala.

Andhra Pradesh: Boosting Infrastructure
In Andhra Pradesh, PM Modi will launch projects to enhance connectivity and defense capabilities. Seven National Highway projects will improve access to heritage sites like Tirupati and Srikalahasti, while railway initiatives, including the doubling of the Bugganapalle-Panyam line, aim to boost capacity. A Rs 1,460-crore missile test range at Nagayalanka will strengthen India’s defense infrastructure. Additionally, the PM Ekta Mall in Visakhapatnam will promote local artisans and the “One District One Product” initiative, fostering economic integration.

Strategic and Economic Implications
The Vizhinjam Port positions India as a global trade hub, cutting logistics costs and transit times. In Andhra Pradesh, the projects align with the Viksit Bharat vision, driving industrial and tourism growth. However, Kerala’s concerns over repaying Rs 10,000-12,000 crore in viability gap funding as a loan highlight tensions in federal financial arrangements.
