From Defence to Energy, PM Modi-Putin Meet Today, These Big India-Russia Deals May Be Discussed

New Delhi: A bilateral meeting is going to be held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek late Monday evening. This meeting will take place during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Many important issues related to India-Russia relations along with energy, fertilisers, defence and trade are likely to be discussed in the meeting.

Why is the important meeting of Modi-Putin taking place in Bishkek?

The two leaders will meet face-to-face for the first time since their annual summit in December 2025. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the privileged strategic partnership of India and Russia will be comprehensively reviewed in the meeting. Apart from this, progress made in various areas of bilateral cooperation will also be discussed.

The next meeting of the two leaders is also proposed during the BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi on 12 September 2026.

Why will energy and fertilisers be the big issues of the meeting?

Amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia and uncertainty in the global supply chain, uninterrupted supply of oil and fertilisers from Russia is very important for India. Russia is among the major crude oil suppliers to India.

Recently Foreign Minister S. During Jaishankar's visit to Moscow, President Putin had assured India of regular supply of fuel and fertilisers. In such a situation, issues like long-term supply agreements, payment arrangements and trade imbalance can be discussed in the Modi-Putin meeting.

Nuclear energy, fertiliser plants, high technology, defense and industrial cooperation are being considered as important pillars of the future of India-Russia relations. Both countries have set a target of increasing bilateral trade to 100 billion dollars by the year 2030.
