PM Modi Thanked Trump for Diwali Wishes: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday thanked US President Donald Trump for his Diwali wishes and expressed hope that the two great democracies will continue to illuminate the world with hope. This statement came a day after Trump's claim on Tuesday, in which he said that he spoke to PM Modi on the phone.
At a Diwali ceremony held at the White House on Tuesday, Trump lit a traditional brass lamp and said it symbolized "light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and the victory of good over evil." The event was attended by key administration officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai, India's Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and Washington's envoy to New Delhi Sergio Gore. A delegation of Indian-American business leaders was also present.
Ahead of the ceremony, Trump spoke to reporters at the White House and described PM Modi as a "great guy" and a "great friend. " "I spoke to your Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) just today. We had a very good conversation. We talked about trade. We discussed many things, but mainly the world of business. He is very interested in it," he said.
Trump said that the issue of regional peace was also touched upon in the talks. He had earlier encouraged India and Pakistan to avoid conflict. "We talked a while back about there being no war with Pakistan. And I think because of the trade issue I was able to talk about it. Now there is no war between India and Pakistan. It was a very good thing."
This latest conversation of Trump with PM Modi took place a week after his previous claim, in which he had said that PM Modi had assured him that India would stop buying oil from Russia. However, the central government rejected this claim, clarifying that no such talks had taken place.
"On this Diwali, may both our great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and remain united against terrorism in all its forms," PM Modi posted on Instagram.
The event reflects the strong India-US ties, especially in terms of trade and regional stability. However, some of Trump's claims, such as Russian oil purchases, have been rejected by India, highlighting the complexity of the dialogue between the two countries.
