National News: The Punjab government has taken a major step in treating serious diseases like cancer, setting an example for the whole country. Thousands of people now get help from two modern hospitals in Sangrur and New Chandigarh (Mullanpur). Cancer patients no longer need to travel to big cities like Delhi or Mumbai. This achievement is the result of the Punjab government’s vision, dedication, and careful planning.
The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center in New Chandigarh is a 300-bed hospital with all the latest facilities for cancer treatment and diagnosis. The state government provided 50 acres of land for free. Over ₹510 crore was spent to build new buildings, operation theaters, scanning machines, power, water, and patient accommodation. This shows the government’s strong commitment to public health.
The Punjab government partnered with the Tata Memorial Center (TMC) to run the hospital. TMC manages doctors, treatment, and technical services, while the government provides the budget, medicines, equipment, and infrastructure. The third MoU signed in August 2025 confirms the long-term commitment. This partnership is an excellent example of cooperation for public service.
The government ensures free or low-cost treatment for the poor. The Chief Minister Punjab Cancer Relief Fund and Ayushman Bharat Yojana are linked with these hospitals. Needy patients can get free treatment up to ₹5 lakh. Currently, 85% of patients in both hospitals are receiving fully free or highly subsidized treatment, made possible by the Punjab government.
In 2025, the government added robotic surgery facilities at New Chandigarh, making operations precise and modern. The first 80 surgeries were done completely free for common patients. On August 21, 2025, a new agreement with TMC included plans for cancer screening, anti-tobacco campaigns, training for medical staff, and spreading awareness in rural areas. Over 1.7 lakh people have already been screened, earning the hospital an award on Independence Day 2025. There is currently some shortage of nurses and technicians, but the government is recruiting new staff and plans to hire from medical colleges and nursing schools to ensure full operation. By investing ₹510 crore in medical facilities, providing free treatment, using advanced technology, and supporting the poor, the Punjab government is leading a strong fight against cancer. These hospitals are more than medical centers—they are symbols of hope for millions of people, all thanks to the government’s efforts.
