National News: The Indian Air Force has proposed purchasing 114 Rafale fighter jets under the “Make in India” initiative. This deal, valued at over ₹2 lakh crore, will include more than 60 percent indigenous content. French manufacturer Dassault Aviation will partner with Indian companies to assemble these jets. This move will significantly strengthen India’s air power and increase its long-term defence preparedness.
The Indian Navy will receive six additional P-8I aircraft. These maritime patrol planes are crucial for anti-submarine warfare and coastal security. Currently, the Navy operates 12 P-8I aircraft, and the new additions will nearly double its surveillance and strike capabilities in the Indian Ocean. This procurement will make India’s naval presence far more robust in the region.
The Defence Ministry is also finalising a deal for 113 F-404 engines. These engines will power the indigenous Tejas Mk1A fighter jets, strengthening India’s domestic defence sector. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is scheduled to deliver the first two Tejas Mk1A aircraft by October. With these engines, the Indian Air Force will be able to build a strong fleet of homegrown fighters.
The retirement of the ageing MiG-21 fleet has reduced the Indian Air Force’s squadron strength to 29. The upcoming induction of Rafale and Tejas aircraft will help bridge this gap. The government aims to raise the squadron strength to at least 35 in the coming years. This will ensure India remains combat-ready in the face of regional threats.
This mega deal is not just about defence acquisitions but also a major push for Atmanirbhar Bharat. Indian companies will gain a larger role in production, ensuring technology transfer and domestic manufacturing growth. The move will help India gradually reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and build advanced military platforms locally.
Experts believe that these deals will give India a strong edge over both Pakistan and China. With Rafale jets, P-8I aircraft, and Tejas fighters, India’s forces will be far better equipped to counter regional threats. The combination of air and naval power will enhance India’s deterrence capability significantly.
Final discussions are underway between the Defence Ministry and manufacturers. The government is expected to announce the deals officially within weeks. Once cleared, deliveries will begin in phases from 2025. These procurements will place India among the world’s most powerful air and naval forces, marking a historic leap in national defence strength.
