National News: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the central government in the Lok Sabha. He termed the three controversial bills introduced in the House as a threat to democracy and said that these are taking the country back to the medieval era. There is a provision in these bills that if the prime minister, chief minister, or minister remains in jail for 30 days on serious charges, then they can be removed from the post.

Strong attack by Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, protesting in a black T-shirt, said, "We are going back to the Middle Ages, when the king could remove anyone at will. If he doesn't like someone's face, he orders the ED to arrest him, and in 30 days the democratically elected person is out." He called these bills an attack on the Constitution.

Which three bills caused uproar?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Under these, if a leader remains in custody for 30 days on charges punishable with 5 years or more, he will be removed from the post on the 31st day. However, reappointment is possible after release.

The opposition called it oppressive

The opposition tore copies of the bills in the House, calling it "oppressive." Rahul Gandhi said, "There is a war going on between those who attack the Constitution and those who protect it." Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal also criticized the bills and said, "This bill violates the basic principles of the Constitution. When Amit Shah was the home minister of Gujarat, was he arrested? Did he follow morality then?"

These bills have come in the backdrop of controversies over leaders like former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthil Balaji continuing in office while in jail. The opposition claims that the government will misuse these to destabilize the governments of opposition parties.
