The Election Commission of India has strongly rejected claims by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accusing it of engaging in “vote theft.” It called these allegations completely baseless.

The EC said it had sent Rahul Gandhi an email and a letter in June inviting him to discuss issues with the voter rolls. But he did not reply. Instead, the Congress MP made strong accusations and reportedly threatened EC officials.

His recent claims came during a discussion on the Bihar Special Intensive Revision. Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Commission was aiding the BJP by stealing votes and claimed to have “100% proof.” He said, once made public, the entire country will learn that the EC is involved and questioned who benefits—“They’re doing it for the BJP.”

Congress claims internal findings

Our party members have been investigating suspected cases of voter fraud for the past six months, Rahul said. They believe they uncovered an “atom bomb” of evidence. “Since the EC was not helpful, we carried out our own probe,” he said. If anyone in the poll body is found involved in this exercise, we will not spare them, the Congress MP warned. He called the actions tantamount to treason and said no one will be spared.

EC response & staff guidance

Later in the day, the Election Commission issued a statement calling the allegations “baseless” and part of a daily pattern of threats. It urged its staff to ignore such statements and remain committed to fair and transparent conduct. The EC highlighted that it reached out via email and letter on 12 June 2025, but received no reply from Gandhi. It condemned the “wild allegations” and threats against EC personnel as deplorable.

Political backlash and criticisms

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also criticised Gandhi’s remarks, calling them “anti-India.” He pointed out that Rahul Gandhi holds a senior position and should not make statements that could disrupt Parliament. “Rahul Gandhi is not a child... Giving anti-national statements and disrupting Parliament is unacceptable,” the minister said.
