National News: A significant rail mishap was narrowly avoided on Friday in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet district when a MEMU passenger train (66057) operating on the Arakkonam-Katpadi route derailed near Chitteri railway station. The incident occurred shortly after the train departed from the station and had barely traveled a short distance. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, thereby preventing a major tragedy.
Eyewitnesses and railway sources stated that as the train proceeded beyond Chitteri station, a sudden loud noise startled passengers and locals nearby. Acting swiftly, the train’s loco pilot applied emergency brakes and halted the train immediately. His prompt response ensured the safety of all onboard, and no physical harm was reported.
Images from the derailment site and initial assessments revealed a visible break in the railway track at the point of the accident. A crack in the rail line was clearly noticeable, believed to be the primary reason for the derailment. This finding raises serious concerns about the frequency and efficiency of track inspections and routine maintenance practices.
Following the derailment, railway officials, local administration, engineers, and disaster relief teams rushed to the scene. Efforts are currently underway to repair the damaged track and evaluate any structural issues. Southern Railway has temporarily diverted other train services operating on this route. However, an official announcement regarding the complete resumption of services is still awaited.
Local residents and nearby villagers quickly responded by reaching the accident site to support passengers and railway personnel. Their assistance in calming frightened travelers and providing immediate relief was noteworthy. Although initial panic spread among the passengers, all were safely evacuated, and order was soon restored.
This is not the first rail-related incident in the region. In 2011, a tragic collision between two trains near Chitteri station resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals and injured over 70 others. While no lives were lost in the recent incident, it has revived concerns regarding Indian Railways’ safety and infrastructure standards.
Although this derailment did not result in casualties, it serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities in railway infrastructure. Issues such as broken tracks, lack of timely inspections, and inadequate preventive mechanisms continue to pose threats. Had the loco pilot not acted swiftly, this incident might have ended in severe consequences.
