Bengaluru: A 28-year-old bike-taxi captain in Bengaluru was arrested on allegations that he sexually harassed a 20-year-old female passenger on Thursday night. The event was a fair journey, which was from their Church Street to Sudhamanagar. The victim said in her Instagram post that she found the captain trying to touch her legs during the bike ride. Due to fear, she did not stop the ride midway, as she was new in the city.

Why did the incident come to light?

The woman disclosed this incident on social media. Following her post, the social media wing of the police contacted her, and a case was registered at her request. What she posted read, “On 06.11.2025, in Bengaluru (Karnataka), I had to face something that I could never have imagined… While returning to my PG from Church Street on a Rapido ride, the captain tried to grab my legs while riding."

Who is responsible, and what was the process involved in this step?

The accused has been named as a resident of Muniyappa Layout, Ullal. Police said that after seeing the social media post, they called the woman to the police station on Friday. After assurance, the woman lodged a complaint, after which a case was registered under BNS Section 75 (Sexual Harassment).

What is its wider context?

In a way, it has become a matter of special concern for women's safety and ride-hailing services. There is a demand to increase trust and security in bike-taxi operators and app-based service providers in the city. Many such incidents have come to light in recent times, which show that the personal safety of individuals remains a challenge even in ride-sharing times.

What will happen next now?

The police will further interrogate the accused and collect camera footage, trip data, and other evidence during the ride. The role and transparency of the app-service provider may also be reviewed—for example, driver background, ride records, and safety mechanisms.

This incident may increase awareness among women about the steps to be taken to ensure safe travel—such as facilities to stop rides midway, emergency call buttons, etc.
