The Raja Raghuvanshi murder case in Meghalaya took a dramatic turn when Sonam Raghuvanshi confessed to Shillong police about her extensive contact with a man she called Sanjay Verma. Call records revealed 234 conversations between March 1 and April 8, raising suspicions about Verma’s identity. In a bombshell revelation during interrogation, Sonam admitted that Sanjay Verma was an alias for her lover, Raj Kushwaha, one of the accused in Raja’s May 23 murder during their honeymoon. This confession, reported by probe team has unraveled a complex conspiracy.
Meghalaya Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) uncovered the 234 calls while analyzing Sonam’s phone records, with 119 occurring between March 1 and March 25 alone, often lasting 30–60 minutes. The number, saved as “Hotel” in Sonam’s phone and registered as Sanjay Verma on Truecaller, went offline on June 8 at 11:20 PM, coinciding with Sonam’s appearance in Ghazipur. Police suspect the SIM was procured under a false identity, as it was officially linked to Raj Kushwaha, arrested on June 9. The frequent calls, made before and after Sonam’s May 11 wedding to Raja, suggest a premeditated plot to eliminate her husband.
Under intense questioning, Sonam broke down, admitting that she used the alias Sanjay Verma to conceal her communications with Kushwaha. She confessed to orchestrating Raja’s murder with Kushwaha and three accomplices—Akash Rajput, Vishal Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi—who attacked Raja with machetes near Wei Sawdong Falls, dumping his body in a gorge. Sonam revealed she destroyed Raja’s phone post-murder, while Akash smashed hers to erase evidence. The SIT’s reconstruction of the crime scene on June 17 uncovered a second machete, corroborating her account.
The confession has shifted the investigation’s focus to Kushwaha’s motives and possible financial gains. A Meghalaya Police team in Indore is questioning Sonam’s family and raiding properties linked to the accused. With Raja’s jewelry still missing, the SIT is exploring all angles to ensure justice for the brutal murder that shocked the nation.
