New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed strong objection to an alleged deepfake video viral on social media. In this video he is shown praising Pakistan's diplomatic stance in the context of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Tharoor has called it completely fake, misleading and deliberately spread content.
In the statement issued by Tharoor's office, it was clearly said that this video has been prepared with the help of AI technology and its purpose is to mislead people. The statement said that Dr. Tharoor has not made any such statement and efforts are being made to damage his image. The office has also demanded immediate removal of such material.
The statement appealed to citizens, media platforms and concerned authorities to take responsibility. It has been specifically stated that no video or content should be shared without verification. Also, it has been asked to report such defamatory content and take immediate steps to remove it.
In recent times, cases of fake videos and pictures generated by AI have increased, due to which public figures are suffering losses. This case of Tharoor is also being considered a part of the same series.
Before this controversy, Tharoor had clearly said that he does not like politicization of sports. He had expressed hope that the competition between India and Pakistan will proceed in the spirit of sports. His comments came at a time when Pakistan hinted at backing down on its decision to boycott the group-stage match against India.
It is being said that the match between the two teams is fixed on 15th February, which is being watched by cricket lovers all over the world. In such a situation, the emergence of such fake videos is giving rise to new controversies.
