New Delhi: India has currently refused to give any deadline for the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said on Saturday that the extradition request sent by Dhaka is being considered as per the due legal process and since the courts have a role in the matter, it is not possible to give a date for Hasina's return.
Dinesh Trivedi, during a discussion in Dhaka, said that the Indian government has already made it clear that there is an established and well-established legal process in the case of Hasina's extradition. He said that no definite timeline can be given for the completion of this process.
India's External Affairs Ministry has also said earlier that Bangladesh's request is being investigated as per established procedures.
Trivedi also clarified that Sheikh Hasina was not brought to India by Indian Air Force or Indian Army aircraft. According to him, when Hasina reached India in August 2024, she was still the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and she was brought to India by a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft.
He said that at that time the circumstances in Bangladesh were changing rapidly and India had little option but to accept the situation.
Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh and came to India on 5 August 2024. This development took place amid massive agitation against the government led by her. After this an interim administration was formed in Bangladesh.
Describing the circumstances at that time as very serious, Trivedi said that such incidents should not be repeated anywhere in the world.
The issue of Sheikh Hasina's extradition remains an important topic in relations between India and Bangladesh. Dhaka has been continuously demanding New Delhi send Hasina back. India has not announced any immediate decision or deadline on this demand and has said that the matter will be taken forward through legal process.
At present, it is clear from India's latest statement that the process on Hasina's extradition is going on, but no definite date has been given for when her return will take place.
