Sports News: A new chapter has been added to the history of Indian cricket. Young and talented batsman Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of India's Test team. He will take over the captaincy from the five-Test series against England starting later this month. This series will be the first series of the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.

The biggest reason for this captaincy change was the sudden retirement of two veteran players from Test cricket. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement on 7 May after his brilliant 11-year and 67-Test career. At the same time, Virat Kohli surprised the cricket world on 12 May by saying goodbye to Test cricket. In the absence of these two stars, young Gill has now been entrusted with the leadership of the next generation.

Gill said, "Rohit and Virat redefined captaincy."

Shubman Gill said in an interview that he got to learn a lot from Rohit Sharma's captaincy. He said, "Rohit bhai used to be very clear on the field. He used to talk to the players openly and explain the plan. He was a very strong captain strategically." Gill also told that Rohit sometimes used to say something in anger, but the players knew that all that was not from the heart. "His nature is such that even scolding seems like teaching," Gill said.

On the other hand, regarding Virat Kohli's captaincy, Gill said, "Virat Bhai's thinking was very sharp. If a strategy was not working, he would immediately make changes and clearly explain the role of each player." According to Gill, he learned the art of taking quick decisions and adapting himself according to the situation from Kohli.

Gill's real test will begin with the England tour

India's tour of England will run from June to August 2025, in which five Test matches will be played. The matches are scheduled to be played at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. This high-stakes series will mark the first major test of Shubman Gill’s leadership as India’s new Test captain. This time the selectors have given a chance to young players along with experience. Rishabh Pant has been made the vice-captain, while young faces like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudarshan, and Nitish Reddy have been included in the team.

India's Test team is as follows

Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav. With the exit of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, a glorious era of Indian Test cricket has drawn to a close. Now, all eyes turn to Shubman Gill—can he carry forward their legacy and lead Indian cricket to even greater heights?
