New Delhi: A major accident was narrowly averted this morning at Delhi Airport. SpiceJet flight SG121, which was en route from Delhi to Leh, suffered an engine failure just minutes after takeoff. There were about 150 passengers on board the Boeing 737 plane, but the pilots immediately took the right decision and landed the plane back in Delhi. Everyone landed safely.
The flight took off from India Gate Airport at 6:08 am. After takeoff the crew experienced a problem with engine No. 2. Some even noticed sparks or small fires externally. The pilot immediately informed air traffic control and prepared for an emergency landing. A full alert was immediately issued at the airport like fire brigade, ambulance, and security teams all stood ready. The plane landed safely at 6:49 am. The total flight time was only 41 minutes.
SpiceJet later issued a statement saying, "The flight had to be called back due to a technical glitch. The plane landed safely and all passengers disembarked normally. There was no fire alarm in the cockpit." Second flights or alternative arrangements are being made for the passengers. Many passengers told that everyone was scared during landing, but the crew remained very calm and handled everyone.
This incident happened on the same day when 7 people lost their lives in an air ambulance crash in Jharkhand yesterday. In such a situation, questions are being raised on air safety – is the maintenance of the plane being done properly? DGCA has started investigation. What was the reason for engine failure – old machine, lack of maintenance or any other technical issue? All this will be known.
Overall, today was a good day because the quick thinking of the pilots and the preparedness of the airport prevented a major accident. But this is a reminder that even a small error in air travel can become a big danger. It is hoped that the investigation will reveal the truth and such incidents will not happen again.
