Tribal Affairs Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Shah, finds himself at the center of a major controversy after his statement against Colonel Sofia Qureshi triggered legal proceedings and widespread political outrage. Late Wednesday night, an FIR was filed at Manpur police station in Mhow in connection with his remarks, following which Shah approached the Supreme Court seeking relief.

Supreme Court Reacts Strongly
The Supreme Court, however, refused to overlook the minister’s conduct and reprimanded him in open court. The judges emphasized that a person occupying a constitutional post must act with greater caution and responsibility, particularly during sensitive times.

High Court Flags Issues in FIR
Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and questioned the manner in which the FIR was drafted. A division bench comprising Justice Atul Shridharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla expressed dissatisfaction, noting that the FIR lacked proper articulation of the offence. The bench instructed the state government to revise the document and confirmed that further hearings will continue under the Court’s direct supervision.

Minister Moves Supreme Court
Shah had petitioned the Supreme Court seeking to have the FIR cancelled. In his plea, he included an apology for his controversial remarks, acknowledging the backlash. The top court has agreed to take up the matter for detailed hearing on Friday and is also set to examine video footage that allegedly captures the minister’s comments targeting Colonel Qureshi.

Political Fallout Deepens
The statement has ignited strong reactions from opposition parties, particularly the Congress, which has demanded Vijay Shah's immediate dismissal from the cabinet. Demonstrations were reported from major cities including Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur, where party workers staged protests holding placards and shouting slogans. The Congress has accused Shah of dishonoring the dignity of a woman officer in the Indian Army and has urged the Chief Minister to take firm action.

As both courts and public opinion turn against Shah, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the minister retains his position or is forced to step down amid growing pressure.
