Delhi: The Indian Air Force’s Tejas fighter aircraft crashed during an aerobatic display at the Dubai Air Show today, resulting in the death of Wing Commander Namansh Syal. He was piloting the jet during the live demonstration when the incident occurred. Syal belonged to Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. The crash happened in front of thousands of spectators. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the loss, calling it heartbreaking and saluting the officer’s dedication.
The incident took place at 3:40 PM IST during the air show at Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai. The Tejas took off as part of its scheduled performance. Everything was proceeding normally when suddenly the aircraft lost control mid-air. The jet rapidly descended and impacted the ground with force. Witnesses reported a loud explosion followed by flames and heavy smoke rising near the display area.
According to early observations, the aircraft dropped too quickly for the pilot to perform an ejection. Reports suggest the crash happened within seconds, leaving no reaction time. The impact resulted in severe injuries, which later led to Wing Commander Syal’s death. Those present at the show described the crash as sudden and shocking. Rescue teams reached the site immediately but could not save him.
In an official statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed the crash and the pilot’s death due to critical injuries. The IAF expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured full support to the bereaved family. They also announced the formation of a Court of Inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident. The force referred to the incident as an irreparable loss to the nation.

He said the nation has lost a courageous pilot committed to serving the country. He extended condolences to the family, highlighting Syal’s service and valour. Messages of respect and grief are pouring in from across the state and defence circles.
The IAF’s Court of Inquiry will examine all flight data, on-ground visuals and engineering details. Investigators will review aircraft performance, weather conditions and emergency response sequence. Experts will focus on why the pilot could not eject in time. Findings will be crucial for future safety measures during international demonstrations involving combat jets.
The incident has sparked national mourning, with tributes from defence leaders, pilots and citizens. Social media is flooded with condolence messages honouring Wing Commander Syal’s sacrifice. Aviation experts have called the crash a devastating blow but emphasised pride in his role representing India globally.
