VV Giri was the first Vice President of India to resign before the end of their term. Following Zakir Hussain's death in May 1969, VV Giri took over as acting president.
Giri resigned as vice president on July 20, 1969, to run as an independent candidate in the presidential election. After VV Giri, Ramaswamy Venkataraman became the second vice president to resign before the end of his term. Venkataraman resigned in 1987, after being selected as the Congress party's presidential nominee to succeed President Giani Zail Singh.
