TMC Leaders Target of 'Egg Attacks' in West Bengal; Mamata Banerjee Blames BJP for Unrest

Amid rising public anger over corruption allegations, top TMC leaders, including Kunal Ghosh, Madan Mitra, and Abhishek Banerjee, were targeted with eggs and stones by protesters, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to blame the BJP for orchestrating the unrest.

West Bengal: TMC leader and MLA Kunal Ghosh was targeted with an egg outside the residence of former West Bengal Chief Minister and party chief Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Monday. This incident took place as Ghosh was leaving Banerjee’s residence. An egg was thrown at him from outside the premises, briefly creating a commotion in the area. A local youth, identified as Chandan, later claimed responsibility for the act. Speaking to reporters, he defended his actions and said he had deliberately thrown the egg at the TMC leader. There were no reports of injuries, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined.

What Chandan had said?

Chandan spoke to the media, “They have done a lot of atrocities on people. Kunal Ghosh is no less. So, they deserve this. They have wronged us a lot"

TMC had not yet issued any official statement. Kunal Ghosh also did not reacted promptly following the incident.

Who else were targeted?

Senior TMC leader MLS Madan Mitra faced identical scenario in the Ariadaha, Kamarhati. Protesters allegedly threw eggs upon the convoy of Madan Mitra. Protesters also raised slogans against him. Reportedly following the incident, he left the place amid growing escalations.

What happened with Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur?

The incident follows a tense confrontation involving TMC National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas. Angry local residents blocked Banerjee to demand answers over unresolved neighborhood issues, with the demonstration quickly escalating as protesters hurled eggs and stones while shouting anti-TMC slogans.   

Banerjee required brief medical attention on-site but chose to press ahead with his scheduled itinerary despite the disruption. Local police have since arrested five individuals in connection with the clash. Investigators note that several of the suspects allegedly have ties to local political groups.

The bigger picture?

Amid these ongoing rows, Mamata Banerji blamed BJP for these continuous unrest. she wrote that the ruling forces had crossed all limits and blamed the BJP of encouraging such attacks. As in recent weeks, several such incidents have been reported. People continuously coming with such confrontations alleging extortion, corruption and malpractices.
