Kolkata: Trinamool Congress faces fresh turmoil as Lok Sabha MP Prasun Banerjee reportedly joins the rebel faction led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. The development adds to mounting challenges for Mamata Banerjee amid growing dissent within the party.
The ongoing rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) shows no signs of abating. Lok Sabha MP Prasun Banerjee, who until Wednesday stood with Mamata Banerjee, has now revolted against the party high command and joined the 'Kakoli Group' of rebel MPs.
TMC Lok Sabha MP Prasun Banerjee on Thursday has joined the party's rebel 'Kakoli Group' and has also signed a letter demanding the formation of a separate bloc in Parliament.
Prasun Banerjee has signed a letter demanding the formation of a separate faction in Parliament. The rebel faction within the TMC is working to secure recognition as a separate bloc in the Lok Sabha.
So far, 20 Lok Sabha MPs, including Prasun Banerjee, have joined this faction. Mamata Banerjee's camp now has eight MPs left. The rebel group is continuously garnering support from MPs to expand its base. Prasun Banerjee has been elected MP from Howrah for the third consecutive time and has a strong presence in both sports and politics.
Earlier, there were reports of several Rajya Sabha MPs resigning from the Rajya Sabha and others being in contact with the rebel group. Although some MPs denied these reports, Prasun Banerjee's move has strengthened the rebel group's claims.
