New Delhi: Currently, India's Army, Navy, and Air Force operate somewhat independently; they conduct their own training and formulate their own plans, coordinating with each other only when a conflict arises. However, the government is now working to integrate them—a concept known as "Theatre Commands." The new Chief of Defence Staff, General NS Raja Subramani, is accelerating this initiative, and a comprehensive plan will soon be presented to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This proposal has been in the works for nearly two decades, and a final decision is now imminent.

What is Theatre Command?

Theatre Command entails placing all three armed forces under the authority of a single commander within a specific region. The current plan envisages the creation of three major commands: one for the northern border with China, another for the western border with Pakistan, and a third—a maritime command—to oversee security at sea. Each command will be led by a four-star officer. This structure will enable the three services to operate cohesively and rapidly during wartime, facilitating simultaneous combat operations across land, sea, and air—capabilities that were more time-consuming to coordinate.

What are Challenges in the new plan?

Defence experts note that this transition is far from simple. The armed forces have distinct regulations, budgets, and operational methods. Discussions are still ongoing regarding the division of roles, allocation of funds, and the hierarchy of command. The concept has been under consideration since the Kargil War, and the post of Chief of Defence Staff was established in 2019. General Subramani is now working to implement Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of integration, self-reliance, and the adoption of new technologies. This could mark the most significant transformation of the armed forces since independence. Also Read: Rift within BJP over the 'Satluj' issue; party leader lashes out at Ravneet Bittu.

A Current Necessity for the Armed Forces?

If the Cabinet Committee approves this plan, India will join the ranks of major nations like the US and China by establishing an integrated military structure. This process could take several years, as it entails creating new commands, redeploying personnel, and formulating new regulations. All eyes are currently on the Defence Minister's decision. Its implementation would further strengthen India's security. The general public would also realize that our armed forces would be better equipped to defend the nation. At present, the potential challenges associated with implementing this new plan are being thoroughly examined. Significant news regarding this matter could emerge soon.
