Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced a hike in the minimum wages for agricultural workers in Uttar Pradesh. The aim of this move is to improve the economic conditions of rural labourers. With this change, workers will now earn Rs 252 per day or Rs 6,552 per month, giving a solid boost to their income.
Workers already getting more than this new rate will keep their current wages and benefits without any loss. The new wage update was announced by MK Shanmuga Sundaram, principal secretary of the Labour and Employment Department. These revised wages will apply to all types of farming and related agricultural work throughout the state.
The state government has expanded the meaning of agricultural labour. Now, work such as animal husbandry, beekeeping, and mushroom farming will also fall under this category. Wages can now be paid through cash, farm produce, or digital payment methods, giving flexibility to both employers and workers.
The state has also brought in a minimum hourly wage system for part-time or short-term workers. The hourly wage cannot be less than one-sixth of the daily wage, helping protect those who work for fewer hours. The government added that if a worker is already getting more than the new hourly wage, their current rate will remain the same and be treated as the minimum standard for them.
CM Yogi said that safeguarding the rights and income of workers is a top priority for his government. Earlier, the UP government had registered unorganised sector workers through the e-Shram portal to connect them with government welfare schemes.
