New Delhi: An accident shocked everyone on Friday morning at Uttam Nagar East Metro Station in the capital. The 12th class student suddenly jumped onto the metro tracks and died within a few seconds. The death of 17 year old Ashwini Dagar, a resident of Najafgarh, created an uproar in the family. The incident happened around 11:30 am when the metro coming from Dwarka was entering the station.
According to eyewitnesses, the boy was standing on the platform. As soon as the metro came closer, he suddenly jumped. Sensation spread among the people present at the spot. The police was immediately informed from the metro control room. Deputy Commissioner of Police Kushal Pal Singh said that the team that reached the spot removed the body and sent it for post-mortem. Metro movement came to a standstill for about half an hour. The passengers had to face a lot of trouble.
Police investigation revealed that Ashwini was enrolled in a coaching center in Uttam Nagar. Like everyday, he had gone to coaching that day also. This accident happened on the way back. His father Devendra Dagar is a driver in DTC. Since he was the only son, all hopes were attached to him. Now there is only an atmosphere of mourning in the house. Policemen said that the family is being interrogated in detail but no concrete reason has emerged yet.
The question is what forced the boy to take such a step. Police have registered a case of death due to unknown reasons. Officials say that the boy's mobile phone and other belongings are being investigated. Maybe we can get some clues. The family members revealed that Ashwini was feeling a little sad for the last few days but no one had thought that he would do something like this.
Ashwini's sudden death has shaken everyone. Neighbors said that he was bright in studies and dreamed of moving ahead. Now those dreams remain unfulfilled. Police say that a clearer picture will emerge after the postmortem report comes. CCTV footage of the metro station is being scrutinized. The Metro management has said that they will arrange for counseling helpline numbers and better monitoring at the stations so that such incidents do not happen again.
In the last few months, incidents of student suicide have increased rapidly in Delhi. In November itself, a 10th class student of a renowned school committed suicide by jumping from Rajendra Place metro station. After that there was a huge uproar regarding the behavior of teachers and school pressure. Now again the same questions are being raised as to how much the pressure of studies has increased that children are embracing death. Experts say that due to coaching culture and race for numbers, the mental health of children is deteriorating.
